Which
uniforms you need will depend on where you officiate. The old USSF shirts and High
School are (almost) the same, while College is completely different.
The
obvious items you need to officiate are:
Whistle (you should carry two)
Coin for tossing
Booking Cards (Red and Yellow), booking wallet and pencil
Black shoes (you can wear turf shoes, cleats or flats but they must
be predominantly black -
a white maker's logo (e.g. Nike swoosh) is allowable.
Black shorts, which must be at least 4 inches above the knees
Black socks (with three white stripes or the USSF logo - for college
see below)
Shirts:
USSF and High School
PRIMARY color is Yellow with black stripes (short or long
sleeved)
Alternate colors are Black with white pinstripe or Red with Black
pinstripe
Shirts with the USSF logo are permissible for High School.
USSF
USSF also allows Blue with a Black pinstripe as an alternate
color. This is required if you
do State Cup
and is being much more common.
Starting in 2008 USSF has changed the appearance of the uniform shirts, although the colors are the same. They have also added a Green shirt, which WMSOA advises you are unlikely to need unless you are doing State Cup games. You may continue
to use the old USSF shirts, and crews may wear a combination of new and old ones. There is no reason to buy new USSF shirts!
High School
High School also allows the old solid black shirt with a white
collar and Fuchsia shirts as
alternates. You may not use the new USSF shirts!
College (NISOA)
PRIMARY color is College Black check
(new as of Fall 2006). Alternates are
College
Orange, College Yellow or College
Blue (again, not necessary unless you work outside our
area).
Socks should be black with
three white stripes. There are NISOA socks with
yellow, orange
and blue stripes, but they
are not necessary unless you are working
outside of the WMSOA area
(and even then
they would rarely be used).
As of Fall 2006 the old solid Black shirt should be retired
permanently. It is no
longer used in College, High School or USSF.
The
primary color should be used when possible, but it is more important
that all officials should be dressed identically (including same
length sleeves) and look professional (no untucked shirts,
sagging socks or giant striped shorts!)
If
you're just starting out, a starter kit is available from several
Referee suppliers
Locally the Soccer Loft
(located inside of the Kentwood Soccer Spot) has a good
selection of equipment for officials, including long and short
sleeved shirts in USSF Yellow, Black and Red.
There are a number of large mail
order vendors also:
Fold-A-Goal - primarily
in the business of selling goals, but has a good election of
inexpensive
Referee gear
Honig's - a somewhat limited
selection for soccer; good prices and good selection of
undergarments. Located in Ann Arbor
Law Five
- soccer only source
Official
Sports - has everything for NFHS, NISOA
and USSF. Good sale prices
before Christmas
